Clara and Zoe, two friends who just came to age are going for a summer retreat. There, girls and boys are mixed without sanctions. Initially Zoe has some difficulties adjusting to her crush's friends, only to be rejected and mocked upon at first. Sebastien then apologised to Zoe which in turn made the two to be closer to each other, leaving behind Clara (played by Selma Brook) to fend for herself. Another girl joined the summer camp; Sonia Axel, a lonely yet outgoing person who has been ill reputed as lesbian. With Zoe now fully in love with Sebastien, Clara befriended Sonia that led to further alienation by their friends. Clara's loneliness has turned things upside down; she lost her virginity to a man she barely knew in an attempt to outdo Zoe's sexual experience with Sebastien. Consequently, Clara now came to terms that being different is just what she needed and as such, she chose to be with Sonia Axel.
My verdict? Not really a film of my choice but yeah I can't deny the sexy part though, especially the memorable kissing scenes between Clara and Sonia. From what I have seen, this is just another teenage bunch of film that tries to emulate one's search of identity while trying to discover the sexuality of oneself. It also shows that homosexuality is no longer a taboo and anyone can fall in love with each other, regardless of gender. With this, it all comes down to social acceptance and perception. Based on the context of this movie, religion plays no role whatsoever in dictating the sexual lives of everyone. It also shows a common phase of confusion that is often experienced by teenagers and youth, appropriately portrayed by Clara who becomes so sensitive to everyone around her. Clara is often shown as a modest girl and she does not fit with the rest of her friends. Her choice of sexuality pushes her further into the envelope, where only Sonia can understand. So all in all, I gave this film an average review with a score of 5 out 10. It has story telling, the characters are there but majority are so cliched save for Clara with whom I can relate (hey, not because I'm a homo! But she is an outcast just like me and that's why her character is decent to me). At times, I do sympathise with Clara; the fate that she makes for herself, the choice the she chooses to have, makes it tough for her at first. Yet, she has no choice but to go with it. I think this particular piece of French film is watchable enough. The story is cohesive on its own and it is easy to follow. Don't let the French turn you off!
