Resurrection of Daemon (Brunei)

Daemon, formerly known as Daredevil, have confirmed indirectly that they will be resurrected from the ashes of black and death metal scene they once helped to forge in 1988. If they do, they may be the first old school metal band to have done so in decades.

First rumor appeared in Alam Kiamat Zine penned by Nonx (Betara Pendita) who is also a drummer for Brunei's death metal legend Grotesque. In the 3rd edition of Alam Kiamat published on July 2006, page 5; Daemon were rumored to have reunited and they did rehearse a couple of songs. In 2012, the band indirectly confirmed this when Muzik Box Productions have agreed to reissue their old demos while releasing their new materials.

This is nonetheless a great news for many a fan of underground metal, particularly those like myself who really want to learn the history of metal both foreign and domestic. Daemon, along with Inferior and Evilorator are some of the names that reverberated within Brunei underground metal scene. I can't wait to have the reissues of their early demos that are long out of print.

Daemon - (1992) Hellstorm [24 bit .flac]

This band had more death metal edge than black. Hailing from Kuala Belait, they originally formed under the name Daredevil but according to some rumors, Daemon was appropriated sometime in 1988 as they started venturing into extreme end of musicianship. Hellstorm was among the most obscure demo tape which could have marked the real arrival of extreme metal in Brunei. Along with Grotesque and Evilorator, Daemon was quickly recognised as a handful of musicians who had created a landmark on their quiet little home.

The sound quality on this demo was godawful; perhaps as a result of decades long build up from audio artifacts which have degraded its overall quality. This sophomore effort (with the first being an eponymous demo released in 1990) offered six tracks of purely unmerciful assault. When one tries to draw a comparison according to contemporary definition of 'speed', this demo sure does lack one. However, it is this doomy approach that has somewhat set Hellstorm as arguably unique in its own right. Had the band lived long enough to become a successful entity, people would surely stick their neck up to this tape, curious over how Daemon did sound like during the early days. Alas, they have now been disbanded. What we have here is a legacy, left behind by our brothers who by now may have lost track on metal. This, children, is the real deal. If you just happened to know metal yesterday, I bet you are ignorant to the fact that your deathcore bands suck! What is the relevance? Well, new kids like new, glossy stuffs. Go figure
