Funerality - (1994) Eros Darkness Tartarus [Demo]

This is perhaps one of few bands whose existence remained obscure to this very date. Boasting a short spanning career, Funerality are the most occult black metal band to have hailed from Brunei Darussalam. Fronted by Shyataan with the other two occult practitioners being Unholy Saint and Lob Omen, they embarked on a quest to fulfill their insatiable lust for dark menacing knowledge from beyond the realms of the living. Prior releasing this demo, at least two promotional tapes have been circulating in the metal reinforced underground bunker built specifically to accommodate this type of art. Despite having the worst probable quality ever known to sanity (digitally transferred from tape by underground militant activist Andika), some songs on this demo are as haunting as an abandoned mansion deep in the dead of night. One has to be patient enough to tolerate a 20 - minute long auditory torture inflicted by this demo. They later disbanded with Shyataan and Unholy Saint went on to form Sahujja'Achra. This proves that age old militants will never say die! These guys are at least persistent in their effort. The only thing they don't have enough is time. Budgetary concerns also comes into mind though; with majority of these occultists are now committed to lead their own family. No matter what they say, if there is a will there is a way.

Tracklist:

1. Intro (In Thy Infernal Dawn) 2:27
2. Spirits of the Deep, Who Never Sleep 3:50
3. Journey 3:49
4. In the Ancient Thrones [Live Rehearsal] 8:02

Anarni - (1998) Demo '98 [2010 Reissue]

Black metal is still pretty much alive in this country. Its supporters range from middle age men to youngsters. Within this small faction of anonymity, therein lies a handful of posers who know nothing but to imitate what their peers are listening to. However, there are people who feel very determined to uphold the black metal torch alight; these people not only download .mp3 or .flac, they are also in high spirit to purchase original releases in support of their favorite bands. Among these people, some are involved in band and side projects and a few have been quite successful within the underground. This is when Anarni come into picture; consist of two well known musicians Pengiran Aslan and Adukasuria, they are later met with Pengiran Andika Harimau Berantai from Malaysia. The latter is very well known with his more successful project 'Singhasari', releasing a mini CD in 2010 which has been met with positive reviews.

As this demo manifests itself from within the treacherous depth of local underground vicinity, Anarni recorded three tracks with no vocals. It later goes into completion after Andika contributed his vocals and lyrics to the second track. After listening to this gem, a dedicated fan will have no problem of appreciating its raw yet atmospheric quality. The song itself is a nod to our ancestors who have fallen victims at the hand of colonial empires whose greed remain strong to this day, devouring every single resource in its path. In order to fully understand the mechanics and mentality of triumvirate behind this warring creation, one has no choice but to submit himself totally before this demo. Posers be warned: this demo may not befit your taste if you happen to be the kind of person condemning legacy bands who by now have existed for decades long before you even know what underground metal meant in actuality. It is a shame to hear deathcore fucks whining around about how not brutal Cannibal Corpse are that they appeared cool throughout the interview. If you have this type of mentality, go somewhere else. This is not the place you want to be.

Tracklist:

1. The March to War... (Intro) 0:40
2. Battle for Our Sacred Kingdom and Noble Ancestors 12:19
3. ...Mournful (Outro) 1:52

Deicide - (1992) Legion [.flac]

The term death metal was quite hazy back then. Approaching the 90s, many metal bands playing fast and extreme form of music known to mankind branched into various subgenres. Fans came up with their own terminology, rationale and standards over what actually defined a certain genre within the dawn of extreme metal milieu. Immolation, Suffocation and Death were among those big yet humble names that paved a whole new path for countless of imitators to come. Somewhere in between, Deicide came into being, fronted by the ever notorious Glen Benton who repeatedly branded an inverted cross into his forehead. The band eponymous debut retained much a mixture of death / thrash metal. However, their musicianship later evolved into even more brutal and unmerciful spells of destruction with the release of Legion. Possibly the best Deicide album of all time, Legion was packed with furious speed unmatched by any other death metal bands that came before and after them during the height of their career. Ever blasphemous and Satanic, this is the album that you sure don't want to miss.

Sahujja'Achra - (2003) Reflect and Belief [.flac Demo]

Extreme metal in Brunei has remained an underground form of art. Given the country's stringent religious regulations on all things deemed as harmful to spiritual and moral well being of an individual, metal does not escape from being targeted by authority. Although the fact remains that metal has long seen its proliferation in this remote nation post independence, there has never been any act playing metal in its most revolting form other than Senjakala. Even the latter only made their debut at the gates of millennium where most Bruneians felt that local music industry literally sucked to the core. Shortly thereafter, Senjakala disbanded with members leaving the moniker to form different project; Amir, the original drummer of Senjakala joined Ouija which later changed name to Seraphim, its former guitarist by the name Yus decided to form a post thrash metal project by the name Reverance [sic], hiring vocalist from Singapore and recruiting former Senjakala drummer Adi (of Wan Long Kok fame) to lend a helping hand. The rest of the band, Jaz, Mawie, Sam and Adi pursued their musical career as Karacoma who finally released their debut album 'Shattered Mirrors' on July 2010.

Some of the bands mentioned above have earned themselves quite a distinctive fan base and following although the numbers may be considerably limited but people are quick to associate commercial rock / metal with Karacoma. However, beneath the glitters and away from the spotlight, a number of bands quickly gained notoriety among those who prefer to revel in something other than the superficial. The underground metal scene in Brunei has more to offer than meets the eye. One of these bands called themselves as Sahujja'Achra; a melodic death / doom metal band whose member includes Aslan (of NoirAtasya, Singhasari, and Anarni fame) and Amilin (formerly a member of kvlt black metal band Funerality). The band early manifestation however does not immediately recruit Aslan into the regiment. It is not until sometime in 2006 that he would eventually join Sahujja'Achra as studio drummer. In 2003, the band unleashed a two - track demo CD entitled 'Reflect and Belief' that has been pressed onto black CD-R and bound in paper sleeve. A session guitarist of Sahujja'Achra once told me that at least one of the two songs presented on the demo bear eerie resemblance to a song recorded by another metal band from the other part of this world. I have confirmed this allegation as true quite a few years back when he played both songs one after another. Could this have been a plagiarism? Or simply a collision of creativity that seems arbitrary? Whatever the answers maybe, this demo reflects what they do believe about their music. A hint of avant - garde element is thriving healthily on this demo and one can surely notice which direction the band in heading.

2. I'm Shadow 5:46

Dissection - (1993) The Somberlain [2006 Reissue Double Discs .flac]

Dissection used to be a big name when it comes to talk about melodic black metal. This was the case during the mid 90s when the band released a couple of quality materials which helped to define Swedish black metal even further. Led by now deceased Jon Nödtveidt, Dissection embarked on a journey complete with sorrowful melancholy amidst carnivorous desire to bring defeat against cosmic forces. This excellent debut had long seen its place on various fans' and enthusiasts personal collection, being one of the best black metal albums to have been released during the glorious era of burgeoning underground scene. Despite having nasty traits, Jon and his team prevailed strongly over their fans despite the fact he was convicted for accessory to murder of a homo Algerian man. He was then subsequently incarcerated but not before releasing Dissection magnificent sophomore effort 'Storm of the Light's Bane' which quickly garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews among die hard fans. As for this debut, the title track itself had been worshipped by many for its mournful atmosphere yet able to create an airburst of sheer brutality unmatched by its lesser peers. Nobody could even begin to comprehend how Jon and his team managed to craft such a beautiful track. Nevertheless, the whole album provided listeners with answers that had long been sought to decipher its unparalleled beauty. This and Storm of the Light's Bane would definitely combine to become Dissection most powerful efforts to date. Alas, Jon committed suicide shortly after the release of Reinkaos, somewhere prior to August 16 2006. Thus, this album served as a memorial vigil to commemorate one of extreme metal most prolific and talented musicians in our degraded world. Jon left us with his music that would forever be immortalised in the hearts and minds of his long time fans. RIP Jon Andreas Nödtveidt (June 28 1975 – August 13 2006).

Graveworm - (2001) Scourge of Malice [.flac]

Perhaps their last magnificent album; Scourge of Malice brought Graveworm career forward in motion with its intrinsic melody and occasional arcane fury. Ranging from mid to fast paced tempo, this album showcased some of the best tracks in Graveworm entire catalog with mournful cover of Iron Maiden classic 'Fear of the Dark' that was often attributed to Cradle of Filth. With a strong presence of keyboards, Scourge of Malice would become a sought after material in years to come. Highly recommended for the uninitiated. Available in .flac format

Sextrash - (1990) Sexual Carnage [Reissue] [.flac]

A friend of mine sold to me this CD for just $25. I grabbed it along with Funeral Mist 'Salvation' since it was a deal I could not refuse. The album still retained its raw atmosphere of obscene transgression reflected by the album cover which is perfectly aligned with the title. From the moment this CD spun in my stereo, the gritty production is blatantly shameless; pure evil and cunthrashing insanity addled with orgiastic vocals, biting guitars and skullfucking drummingeddon, Sexual Carnage stood strong with Morbid Visions and I.N.R.I.

Statement of Clarification: To Those Who are Yet to Comprehend

There has been a buzz circling around me that says sharing mp3 and .flac or whatever the hell it is associated with as killing the artists that you like. This also universally applies to every metalhead that is alive and breathing on this wretched planet. People like myself may come a long way into proving that not all filesharing is bad.

A couple of so called tr00 or kvlt metal fans have condemned those who download mp3s as fake, retarded, faggot and so on (insert all labeling shit here) because they allegedly refused to purchase the original tape cassettes, vinyls and CDs of metal artists.
Well, they might as well correct. In this sense, nobody can help but to agree that in order to show true support, buying the originals is just one of the best methods which would qualify one as devoted fans.

But lo and behold; this issue varies on geographical and demographical context of society in which metalheads thrived in. Elitists will of course support the above statement, citing that internet has rendered filesharing so easy that it can be done with just one click of your finger.

I in particular am not very pleased with this inconsiderate opinion.

Picture yourself living in a country where the only entertainment you have is the shopping mall and cinema, with no concerts or gigs allowed to be held even in private residents. That's just the start. Well, the music records really sell nothing more than cheap, pirated CDs and DVDs of pop and R&B stuff. Metal is banned in totality. Anything that is metal related, be it merchandise (that includes your allegedly original Legion t - shirt circa 1992) or records are completely non existent from the aforementioned record stores. Oh yes there is one alternative, a voice said; 'Let's order from eBay and Amazon.com!' Great. We might as well do that 10 minutes ago. Okay. So now you've browsed the internet, logged on to eBay in search of your favorite metal digipak with bonus materials and DVDs as well as a couple of other albums that squeezed you off your hard earned bucks. Three weeks later, you've been informed by the mail processing center that all the stuffs you ordered weeks ago have arrived safely at the MPC. "Yes! Finally! Nobody will label me as poser now that I have my Avsky, Beherit and Moonblood; all in kvlt vinyl and digipaks with some of the most evil t - shirts." You're on your way to the MPC, thinking that after procuring your ordered materials, you would take a couple of photos of your precious, highly anticipated vinyls and digipak, upload them to Facebook, tagged your friends and boast all day about how great it is to have these kvlt artifacts in your possession!! Yeah, your worst nightmare has just begun kid...

Okay, so you arrive at the MPC with a noticeably wide smile from ear to ear, hoping that after this you can load Avsky CD into your vehicle stereo system and blast the fuck out of it. And you are very certain about it with 100% confidence rate spiking on your certainty meter. You could never go wrong. Upon arriving at the scene, you witness what appears to be individuals wearing turbans and they are exactly scrutinising your stuffs. Much to your surprise, their name tags indicated that these dudes are from State Religious Affairs and you know it is not a good news when any one of these people happen to analyse your vinyls, digipaks and t - shirts that are adorably adorned with inverted crosses, Satanic imagery complete with anti religious phrases etched with gold ink at the back of your gatefold vinyl. Now let's assume that you guys have a brief icebreaking session, consider them asking your religious stance and morality in general. They explained to you that your stuffs are nevertheless in direct violation of State religious regulations that your favorite Moonblood vinyls and all are utterly blasphemous, Satanic and potentially dangerous to your entire country. They also told you that your horrifically worshipped items are threatening national security and as such you are liable to be institutionalised in religious correctional facility of your peaceful country. You cannot argue with them because by ordering those records and t - shirts, you are in reality already losing the battle over State sponsored religious police. They take your items only to have them subsequently destroyed in the place where they actually belong in theory; fire. The MPC staffs couldn't do much to help you. You're on your own. They confiscated your stuffs and are schedule for incineration upon arriving back at their headquarter. You don't get anything in the end. Your money's gone just like that.

Well people, the above scenario that I have recreated in sloppy details is just the kind of thing that happened over here. Where is here? It is Brunei Darussalam. For those of you who are yet to know where the fuck is Brunei Darussalam and its nitty gritty information, here's a bit of juicy info for you all; it's a small Muslim country on the island of Borneo. Sandwiched in between by Sabah and Sarawak; countries that by now regretted to have become part of East Malaysia. It has four districts, well look em up will ya? The Sultan is a great, caring ruler for he often goes out to check on the welfare of his people. Backed by the country's lush production of fossil fuel, Brunei is a developed country in undeveloped fashion. Sort of.

Now let's talk about metal in this country. We have been fans for so long. With the advent of the internet, things are, well, definitely much more easier for us to stay updated with what is going on in global metal scene since ours are more or less alive and kicking. So far, two documentaries that deal exclusively on this subject matter have been produced independently by local fans, interviewing obscure underground black metal, death metal and even some metalcore / deathcore bands. Bands like Grotesque, Draconaeon and the uh, more radio friendly for that matter; Karacoma, have added more colors to the ever dulling palette of metal complexion in Brunei. Reality hurts the most, people. I tell you what, these bands (except for Karacoma) have a tough time getting their songs and demos to be heard across the world because of strict regulations being imposed by the government of this quiet nation. It would be almost impossible to see local black metal band demo tape being sold at the shopping mall. No. It only happens in your dream or perhaps back at your country where that would be absolutely no problem at all. With zero access to original metal records, tapes, vinyls, CDs, DVDs, t - shirt, basically everything metal, Brunei is not a good place for serious collectors. Yet there are still a handful of fans who managed to smuggle their materials and get past security without hassle. This has to be done in two ways; either you have someone from the inside working somewhere to grant entry to your Satanic, nun raping metal records or you could just smuggle them from the border by using your friend's address in Miri or Limbang. That you have to drive all the way from Brunei to Miri to ensure that your order is a success and yielded something exhilarating.

Truth is, with so much of this indecent hassle and scrutiny, downloading or filesharing seems to be the only viable option for the time being. It is not so much that we do not want to purchase the originals. Hell, if our country is as free as USA, we won't probably feel the need to download any shit from the internet. However, that doesn't happen here. Freedom of entertainment is completely stripped off from the people in exchange of seemingly peaceful nation that comes with free access to education, healthcare and most government run facility because His Majesty the Sultan has kindly subsidised almost every commodity for his people. With Malay Islamic Monarchy as the country's first and foremost philosophy, metalheads have quickly fallen victim into using the ever hated method of obtaining their favorite music; download. Sorry people, if you want to argue with me with your pitiful opinions, you may as well dump them somewhere else because you can never understand how difficult it is for a single devoted metalhead like me to survive in the ocean of mainstream lackluster shits filled with ignorant bunch and religious authorities whose unshakeable beliefs that metal is a complete evil remained as something that sets apart the definition of freedom between you and I.

The Gathering - (1999) How to Measure a Planet? [Dual Disc Edition]

You ask me how to measure this and that but The Gathering have something completely different in mind; How to Measure a Planet? is the most progressive and experimental question that the band have tried to answer. And yes their answer to that is this album. Picking up the remnants of where Mandylion and Nighttime Birds left, The Gathering paved a whole new avenue that takes their journey into the outer space. It breaks new ground for the band's career; gone are the double bass drums that once heard on Mandylion. Stripping themselves from more primitive, or perhaps conservative metal vicinity, How to Measure a Planet brings about great surprises for the uninitiated. Old fans would feel awkward toward this release. However, this depends on what type of fans are you talking to.

Grotesque - (2009) Demo 2009

Brunei's own death metal legend Grotesque was first baptised as Descending Horror somewhere in 1992 - 93. Home to some of the most deadly metal legends, Kuala Belait witnessed the incarnation of Grotesque with the release of Forgotten & Dismal demo tape in 1993. After this, the band went on a long hiatus beginning from 1996. After long period of silent slumber, in 2009 Grotesque rose once again; entering Victorious Record studio to rework and record their old demo track 'Let Me Fall' released independently to unsuspecting metal fans. Download the preview below and support the band for their upcoming release! Originally posted at Alam Durjana.

Beherit - (1993) The Oath of Black Blood [.flac]

One of the leading examples of how early black metal sounded like; quietly distorted guitars, loud growling vocals, mid paced attack. All of it would later come in package with the release of The Oath of Black Blood; a compilation of Beherit infamous Demonomancy demo and Dawn of Satan's Millennium EP. The band were given a sum of money to record in the studio. However, Beherit spent the money on alcohol. A lot of people considered this to be the first ever Beherit album, while I myself see it as a compilation despite Marko insistence that it is indeed a full length. Now available as .flac!

Xasthur - (2003) Suicide in Dark Serenity [.flac]

Now a defunct entity, Xasthur has released quite a handful of materials in the past. Taking a parallel journey into the unknown plane that lasts forever this band managed to grab my attention with The Funeral of Being which is preceded by this EP. Although some may find Xasthur music as nothing short of repetitive atonal keys again and again, there exists a few meditative properties able to calm even the shakiest of a person. Of course, it depends on who you are talking to. Grab this release in .flac format!

The Abyss - (1996) Summon the Beast

A side project of Swedish death metal masters Hypocrisy, The Abyss clearly exhibits the darker side of Tägtgren and co. in which they felt cannot be manifested with Hypocrisy. Spawning two albums with this being the second and last in The Abyss discography, Summon the Beast brings forth unparalleled malevolence previously unheard of in Hypocrisy. Further exploring the realms of occult has brought The Abyss closer in lines with any other black metal elites out there. Somehow, its impact is often being overlooked by many.

The Gathering - (1995) Mandylion [Japan Bonus Tracks]

Behold the start of what later become the most awesome Gothic / experimental metal band on this planet! Previous albums fared well on average. It wasn't until Anneke van Giersbergen joined the lineup that The Gathering began to breathe new life into their music. With Mandylion, the band sounded more solid and confident, eliminating initial anxiety whether Anneke would bring a disaster to The Gathering. Definitely not. They are worth the praise for trying new things and the results are often very well appreciated. Despite their growing success, they chose to remain humble while working hard to mold new clay of form out of their creativity. The band's consistency is also something that one should contemplate; their sound while growing ever stronger on shoegaze / trip hop side, is still amazing in its respective nature. At least The Gathering changed their sound for good and this in my opinion does not mean they have sold out. Or perhaps they did and it was for the better too. I liked their first two albums when Bart Smits were filling in on the vocal duties. However, Anneke proved to be something, something more than herself and what The Gathering were previously known as. This is a must purchase album of all time (to open minded people of course). Now available in .flac format with two bonus tracks from Japan pressing.

Sil Khannaz - (2000) Bara Pawaka

A friend of mine lent me the digipak version of Bara Pawaka. I thought it might as well be interesting to have in my collection so I ripped the CD onto my laptop using EAC. At that time I didn't have a knack on using .flac since the ripping configuration was way too Greek for me. Now I have it in .mp3 format. It's nevertheless lossy but it seems to be worthwhile at the moment. I could hardly say negative things about this album, nor do I have significant amount of positive thought about it either. What do you think?

Wings - (1990) Teori Domino

Ah.. Wings. Who among Malay peeps doesn't know this once great band? Famous for their love ballad as well as quasi heavy metal / hard rock proclivity. Fronted by the well known Awie (who has also starred in various blockbuster hits in Malaysia), Wings become a household name during the peak of their career, beginning with Belenggu Irama until Bazooka Penaka. Awie later departed to pursue his solo career which proved to be successful as well thanks to his already well acquainted reputation among fans. Vocal duties are then taken over by Mus from May. As for this album, Teori Domino is their best effort to date. Its production is tight with wealthy amount of solos and deep, bass - heavy drums. A must have for their fans.

The band was once inducted into Encyclopedia Metallum as heavy metal but was later removed by moderators who felt that Wings weren't metal enough. That fucking sucks dude!

F.T.G. - (1998) Aku Tak Peduli [.flac]

Freedom That's Gone first saw their inception in metal arena with the release of an EP titled as the latter. Now a legendary band, their releases got little attention from the outside world. However, they are very well known among fans over this horizon. So here I am giving you people back something that I've been listening to in the past. Although honestly I am not that big a fan of F.T.G. yet their existence remained significance in the development of supposedly healthy metal scene. That is, if they ever associated themselves with any scene. I don't care what you think about this album; because they don't too. Draconaeon - (2003) Rivers of Blood, Rivers of Sorrow [Demo]

Draconaeon. A name that radiates powerful thermobaric shockwave across underground metal enthusiasts in Brunei. Fronted by the ever talented musician named Izzard, he recruited several other militants into Draconaeon (formerly known as Draconian but the name was already registered by another Italian band). They released a one track demo in 2003, aptly titled Rivers of Blood, Rivers of Sorrow to much critical acclaim. Backed by a female vocalist, this demo has left a huge impact crater among newcomers who looked up to them as inspiration.

Abhorer debut album. This is a self - rip of Digipak version released by Shivadarshana Records. One of the most evil bands to have come from Singapore with many believed them as the first black metal band in Asia together with Japan's Sabbat. Rotting Christ - (1996) Triarchy of the Lost Lovers [Bonus Tracks]

With the release of this album, Rotting Christ injected copious amount of Gothic aesthetics that further embellished upon their already magnificent song writing into this beautiful masterpiece. This album appeals to me personally, with sorrowful melody and tranquillizing composition have pushed Rotting Christ's music beyond the realm of traditional black metal. Their next follow up continues to expand Gothic riff galore that shows its healthy impregnation in Triarchy of the Lost Lovers. This release comes with three bonus tracks.

Rotting Christ - (1993) Thy Mighty Contract [Reissue]

One of the most occultic black metal release in the entire history of metal. Rotting Christ have remained consistent over the years. They don't sell out or wimp out to cash in for more money. Instead, Sakis Tolis and co. decided to keep the torch ablaze just like when they first started. Although in small instances, their sound has changed ever since the beginning.

Immolation - (2002) Unholy Cult [.flac]

Immolation may be one of the best and genre defining death metal bands out there. Their approach on anti religious theme goes way beyond senseless babbling of Satan, Lucifer and whatever the hell it has been synonymous with. Beginning with Dawn of Possession and Here in After, Ross Dolan and co brought forward even more mayhemic ferocity that later became a staple of their execution, both in studio and on stage. On Unholy Cult, they once again proved to the masses that death metal might not always need to grow too big; instead of embellishing their handicraft with unnecessary ornament, Immolation insisted that their style should retain tonnes of originality packed with unlimited surprises. Preceded by critically acclaimed Close to a World Below, Unholy Cult grabbed Immolation's fans by the throat. Its unparalleled heaviness never ceased to amaze perhaps even the most seasoned metallers among us. This album deserved a perfect score for perfection is what made up the whole of Unholy Cult.

2. Sinful Nature (3:16)
3. Unholy Cult (8:02)

Dido - (1999) No Angel [Japan Bonus Tracks]

If one were to ask me about which pop artist is my favorite, my answer is Dido. I have a strong reason as to why I would describe her as bona fide manifestation of serenity. Dido is not your typical pop singer who whores about the media seeking for cheap publicity or unnecessary attention by doing stupid things. No she doesn't. On this very debut of her, the awesomeness begins from the very first track until the album finishes. It is weird though for some of you wankering metal elitists would label me as a n00b and poser. Who gives a shit? I love metal more than any other music but that doesn't restrict my growing taste for something that I consider as noteworthy and interesting.

This version comes with two additional bonus tracks and three music videos:

Tracklist:

1. Here with Me 4:14
